Can you imagine if you were parenting back in the good old days? I recall my mum telling me how nappies were basically terry cloths, that would be pinned on, then once soiled, they would be washed, scrubbed and boiled ready for the next poo explosion. I mean…how on earth did mums find the time? I can just about find the time to change disposables!
Thank goodness things have moved on since then and whilst you can still get reusable nappies, I’m personally all about the disposables (not too good for the environment though I know!)
With 3 children in tow….this is what I’ve learned about nappies, and I hope it can help you too!
1. COLOUR CHANGE WHEN WET
“Color Change When Wet” is a feature in most modern nappies. It is usually a yellow line that goes from the front to the back of the nappy which turns blue after it’s wee’d in. I literally had no idea about this feature until one of my mum friends helpfully pointed it out. “I’m not sure if she’s wet” “Ermmm well yes she is mate, the line is blue” SAY WHAT???? Game changer.
2. NAPPY PANTS AREN’T JUST FOR TODDLERS
I always assumed nappies were for babies, and nappy pants were for toddlers who were potty training. I put one on my (very wriggly) baby at 11 months old and it was so much easier. She wriggled so much that I could never quite get that perfect fit with a nappy. I have since learnt that it’s quite common for a baby to wear nappy pants too! Nappy pants actually have the same absorbency as a regular nappy so there’s no issues with leaking or having your baby feel wet.
3. THERE IS SUCH A THING AS THE PERFECT FIT
There is such a vast range of nappies out there, and everyone will have their personal favourites. Just beware when changing brands that each brand and size will have a slightly different fit. Just because you are a particular size in one brand, doesn’t necessarily mean you will be the same size in another brand. Make sure you don’t buy a bulk load from a new nappy brand without trying the fit first. When you find your perfect fit, it makes life so much easier.
4. 12 HOURS OF DRYNESS DOES EXIST!
Newborns pee…a lot! You feel like you spend the entire day changing their nappies, but as they grow and start to (ha ha ha) sleep through the night, you don’t need to change them as often. Look at brands which promise up to 12 hours of dryness. Pampers are my particular favourite; they promise a leak free nappy for up to 12 hours. Hallelujah.
5. NAPPY PANTS DON’T HAVE TO BE PULLED DOWN
After a poo explosion, I would always try and pull nappy pants down like you would regular pants (queue poo EVERYWHERE).
The correct, and easier way to remove them is by ripping each side. No more poo smears! You’re welcome.
